Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic
sounds of ABBA wash through haystack and
car stereo 25 years but not an American
phenom never left home
curl the bracken garden cluster
pearl magenta closer than just
clear crystal
hot then cold then cold again
who knows what strange features
lie just beyond the creature comforts
in early August I miss a birthday
in late August I float lazily
down a Czech river with Czech
families and gypsies and
their swimming dogs and
the memory floats back to me
so I roam the streets of this
old medieval town search for
something brilliant something sweet
a 14-year-old's delight
hunt and collect and send as
countless men
driven by guilt
have roamed these wandering
meanderous cobblestones for nearly
an entire millenia
all that glitters is not gold
it is gold plated, too
or fragment of sky stone
or local legend
or wayfarer's hungry fib
mounted in adoring way
hunt test stop ask
a bit of polished stone finally sent
spinning
halfway around the world
and the castle?
the kids would love that in pocket
bears as well, kept in moat for
200 years
if only I could take
look on bear face at 5:45 as they
turned faces to heaven
waited on haunches as if
clouds would gather darken rain
all things winnie-the-pooh yearns for
overhead windows in castle
close simultaneously
bears seem disappointed climb
to higher point in pit
wait patiently patiently
for some word from God
