Read a poem by another poet written
on the same day:

Journal of the long-awaited time and space

I wonder empty space
what to put               in this
time                    fish swim the muddy river
out of sight               salmonberries just this
side of ripe
                              Patience with
two-hour traffic jam
                                        frog
hoping
                    across cabin deck

Once something devours it's that
excitement in the unknown

I borrowed this weekend, no
stole, won't return it          anything
but empty          Can't give it away
fast enough
                              plane trips
don't take me there any faster

I wanna                    celebrate as expansively
as possible w/ghosts
and other beings long-forgotten
let's trade bumper cars     let's smash
the party game     let's turn porcelain and
thrust ourselves into traffic     let's work on the
breath-take-away part     hand me some
kleenex
                    let's          trap baskets of song
hold them close and closer expect
nothing
                    i'm optimistic, really that we
have a place to return to after
the flood comes.
