we push ahead and tag behind
edge along line for line
till we break pack and split away
to race towards the finish

We mentally pack ready to leave
on the third leg of the journey
a last inspection of this place
note as yet unnoticed details
prepare to take farewell

Bent over forwards head strained
towards the goal we strive for
obsession to outrace outjump
not others really but ourselves
and thus land beyond our best

All we've accumulated on the way
we have to take it with us
unable to jettison excess ballast
surplus baggage in mid-path now
we simply drag it with us home
